The ground thunders with the sound of the horses’ hooves, they thud, and clunk on the ground, making an ever-lasting echo. These echoes vibrating through Libyan designer, Ibrahim Shebani’s identity; Libyan by blood but born in exile.
Riding on the back of his Libyan heritage, Shebani turned his life sentence into an artistic narration bringing it to life through his ready-to-wear brand, Born in Exile’s first FW19-20 collection duly named Modern Heritage. Born in Exile FW19-20 collection, Modern Heritage is inspired by the traditional Libyan horse track. Shebani draws inspiration from his Libyan heritage to create modern and edgy garments that mix fabrics and materials to create one of a kind avant-garde statement pieces.
Modern Heritage arises the horse track with strong embroidery on leather saddles, woven caparisons, metal embellished breastplates, and ankle wraps. Shebani applies these rustic concepts on contemporary materials and fabrics such as denim, Italian calfskin, aniline leather and French silk jacquard beautifully integrated with Libyan accessories; presenting a new take on traditional modernity.
The collection features an array of 17 leather and denim ready-to-wear pieces, three shoe designs and a leather belt from the accessory range. The leather and denim are all embroidered into a variety of pants, jackets, coats, dresses, and skirts. The aniline leather and Italian calfskin come in figure-flattering pieces that emboss the feminine figure. The denim pieces come in slightly oversized bomber jackets and jeans that give a perfect swag street style look. To match the ready-to-wear piece, a high heel mule in leather and denim are intricately embellished with dainty pearls and tassels giving a Marie Antoinette majestic feel.
The FW19-20 collection represents the innovation and creativity of fashion combined with heritage to present a modern twist on the cultural traditions of Libya; turning history into edgy and trendy wearable iconic pieces.
